Adult Characters

From Magical Hogwarts Wiki

Jump to: navigation, search

Magical Hogwarts is unique in the category of other HP RPG's for several reasons. Here are just a few of those reasons; first, we offer a choice of three schools to choose from when making a student character. Second, we offer a variety of options for adult characters outside the category of Professors and offer places for in character plotting to occur. Third, we allow adults and upper-classmen students to hold IC jobs that earn their drivers sickles to be used on the board.

The purpose of this guide is to assist you in making an adult character, how it differs from creating a student and what choices you have as a result.

Step 1: The initial character Creation

When creating a character there are different ways of going about creating them, some people start with an personality trait and build around that. Others start with a model. Still others start with a person they have come into contact with or have seen on a movie or TV show and base their character on that. A few start with a story, the background story, and allow that to shape their character. More people use a combination of these to build the different characters they use. However you choose to start, and whether this is your first character or your fifteenth, we ask that you start by reading the [General Rules|Basic Rules & Regulations], the New Player's Guide and The Character Creation Guide. Each of these are updated on a regular basis so it’s a good idea to read them on a regular basis so that you remain familiar with them.

As with a student character, when creating an adult character nationality determines many things. Whether you are working from scratch or from inspiration, where they come from would influence basic things like name and what school they went to, therefore you’ll also want to read the school guides (Hogwarts Guide, Durmstrang Guide, Beauxbatons Guide) associated with the school of your choosing to determine things like name requirements and house characteristics. If you are creating a character that grew up in an outside country and went to an original NPC school, please check and make sure someone else hasn’t already either completed or started a NPC school in the same area. We’d prefer not to have duplicates as it creates confusion. If there is interest in the same area, please work together to create something fantastic.

Choosing your character's career influences what choices they needed to make while still in school (e.g. what N.E.W.T. level courses to take) and after graduation (would they need further training?), as well as where they choose to live after leaving Hogwarts. Experiences with other adult characters are vital to your character (as well as everyone else’s). They can’t experience life without having dealt with the people around them. If you choose to include these sort of experiences in their character sheet, please keep a few things in mind. NPC references are fine, but according to MH Basic Rules & Regulations they have to be admin approved. Usually this means that we ask that you don’t flood the sheet with NPCs and that they take a supporting role (less detail about them, we want to read about your character). If you choose to include played characters in your sheet, each driver of said characters (if they are not your own multichar) must PM the administration team with their permission for you having used their character in your sheet.

Step 2: The Character Sheet

The adult character sheet asks for more information than a student sheet in a variety of ways. Here is an explanation of what details we require and where they are located in the sheet, to lessen the confusion.

General Information:

First Name:
Last Name:
Heritage:
Nationality:
Spoken Languages:
Place of Birth:
Age/Date of Birth:
Position – This is your character’s job, essentially. What do they do for a living? Money doesn’t fall off trees and not everyone can live off an inheritance; nor can the world go round if people don’t work. So just like in the real world, your character needs a job. (Positions like Death Eaters don’t get paid, so they’ll need a ‘day job’). Here is an explanation of the categories we offer and how to succeed securing them.

  • Adult Wizard/Dark Wizard - Adults without specific membergroup positions are either 'adult wizard/graduate or 'dark wizard' depending on how they stand in the war. (Supporters of the Dark Lord or those who think he has the right idea would be the latter,

while those who disagree with him would be considered the former)

The possibilities what your character can do, when part of either of these groups, are almost unlimited, so use your imagination. Anything is allowed as long as it does not fall under its own category (i.e. Ministry Worker) and it must be realistic (i.e. No Royalty)

Some ideas...

   ** Gringotts Cursebreaker
   ** Wizard Wireless DJ
   ** Singer
   ** Author
   ** Model
   ** Mail Order Shop Employee
   ** Postal Employee
   ** Dragon Researcher
   ** Gardener
   ** Hogwarts Express Employee
  • Death Eaters - Those who have pledged service to the Dark Lord. This is a lifelong commitment.
  • Elementals - A special feature group of approved adult Elementals.
  • Healers - A position at St. Mungo's requiring a high level of N.E.W.T.s and many years of advanced training.
  • Ministry Workers - A position within the British Ministry, different departments require different N.E.W.T.s and further training.
  • Order of the Phoenix - an elite group that fights the Dark Lord and his Death Eaters.
  • Professional Quidditch Players - Characters who play for NPC professional Quidditch leagues.
  • Professors - Employed by one of the three Magical schools, requires a N.E.W.T. in the subject taught. Note that all professors need to be approved by the administration prior to making a sheet. Before requesting approval please consult the list of available positions.
  • Shopkeepers - Owner of a shop or store, does not need to be admin approved, please be aware of exisiting shops in the same area.
  • Wizengamot - A judicial position within the Ministry of Magic, requires experience. Older characters only.

Please remember that the N.E.W.T.s must reflect their career choice. Please read the individual guides following this post for more detailed information about each.

General Appearance: Remember that in this section your character is taking shape in the readers head. Be as detailed and clear about what your character looks like. Is there something that stands out about them? What is their head shaped like? How do their features fit on their face? What does their body look like? All of this information is important to the character development. Please also keep it realistic.

Dressing Style: This is reflective of a few things, their personality, their history, their looks and their career choice. Mediwitches won’t be wearing leather mini skirts to St. Mungo’s. Death Eaters don’t dress goth (for the most part). Purebloods who hate Muggles won’t choose to wear jeans and other Muggle clothing. Overweight people usually don’t wear revealing clothing. Please take all of these things into consideration when writing this section.
Personality:

General Character Traits - Because this is an adult character, this information should be detailed and complete. This character has had more time to come to develop a personality. A paragraph of detailed information is a good start, though the more you can write, the better. Think about how they’d react to different situations. What’s their outlook on life? How has their history affected their personality? We recommend you not basing the character directly of yourself or a friend. A few things is fine but carbon copies of people you know (especially yourself) tend to lead to hurt feelings OOC over IC issues or problems.

Personal History

Spouse: If this section does not apply to your character, please leave it blank.
Children: If this section does not apply to your character, please leave it blank.

Background Story - This section is very important and requires more detail for adult characters than for student characters. Characters in their early to late twenties would have little life experience as an adult but would remember their years at school in detail. Older characters (thirties, forties and older) would have more life experience as an adult and a brief overview of their school years. Life experience as an adult can include but is not limited to: marriage, serious relationships and children, formal career training and experience, history of employment and various other details such as purchasing a home.

The history of school and childhood is still required, however the older the character, the less detail is required. We are looking for at least a paragraph of history and childhood, a few paragraphs of student life (depending on age, the younger the character, the more detail is required) and a few paragraphs (minimum) of adult life. The school guides (Hogwarts Guide, Durmstrang Guide, Beauxbatons Guide) come in handy here as well for details about classes and student life.

Rich characters, especially Purebloods, need to fill out an Established Family Background. It doesn’t matter if it is old or new money, it is a requirement for all rich characters and families. It is also recommended for those characters who are anywhere from upper-middle class, middle class to working class. It helps develop the character further, as well as their family.
Minor Details:

Strong Area of Magic:
Weak Area of Magic:
Former School/House: What school they attended and house they were sorted into - should match the nationality and personality. (e.g. French adults would have gone to Beauxbatons, even if they now live in Neroli. Animal lovers with love for Muggles would have gone to Hufflepuff, not Slytherin.)
N.E.W.T.s - What grades they graduated school with. This should reflect their choice of career. Someone who graduated with only a N.E.W.T. in Charms and History of Magic may be hired at the Ministry but not as a Mediwizard, see the individual guides for more information.

Step 3 - Posting your sheet

Post the sheet in the sorting area that corresponds with their former school: Hogwarts graduates & those adults from NPC schools, Durmstrang graduates, Beauxbatons graduates.
