    Free & Taken Canon Characters

Looking to apply for a canon character? You've come to the right place! We've compiled a nearly comprehensive list of the canon characters and grouped them into four sections: Major, Minor, Mentioned, and Canon-plus, and Professional Quidditch Players. The Canon-plus section includes any characters who are mentioned in interviews with J.K., video games, chocolate frog cards, and so on - essentially, anywhere other than the seven novels. The Quidditch section is currently being compiled and will be released in the coming weeks. Within most of these five sections, characters are sub-grouped by age (adult, student) or classified as "other" in the case of non-human characters. We have hyperlinked many of the unclaimed characters' names to a HP Wikia page with some information about them if you're having trouble deciding or remembering who a particular character is.
Note: Any characters with Special Features (e.g. Rita Skeeter - Animagus) are automatically classified as Major canons. Some "beasts" will be classified higher due to their species e.g. Bane could be considered Mentioned, but as a Centaur he is classified as Minor. Portraits, non-humans and ghosts as classified as "Other." Also please note that Griphook and Ragnok are not available to be played as they run our Gringotts accounts!

The application and claims rules are as follows:
    • There is no limit on how many canons you may play. When reviewing each application, we take into account both the quality of the application and your writing history as a driver on the site.
    • Major canons require activity on the board for about two months, with a good standard of role-playing and reliability.
    • Minor canons may be applied for after one month of activity on the forum.
    • Mentioned canons and Canon-plus characters may be applied for at any time; however if you want a mentioned canon for your first character, please apply below with a role-play sample from the desired character's perspective in order to be considered.
    • Canon characters will remain in pending status for six months after the application has been approved. During this time you should be able to finish the character sheet. If you feel you will need an extension, it is your responsibility to contact an admin before the six-month deadline expires to request an extension. If you do not do this, we will consider other players' applications for this canon after the six months have elapsed.
    • Extensions, if granted, last for an additional six months beyond the original approval date and are non-renewable; if you are unable to finish the canon sheet after that, you can reapply for said canon.
    • In the event that you fail to PM an admin after the original claim is up and someone else applies for the same canon, you can also re-apply, but there will be no guarantee that you will be approved for that same character again.
    • If you play a canon character and have not posted him/her IC (in character) in more than six months, s/he will be deemed "open for new applications" and another driver may apply for the canon.
    • If you have applied for a canon character, your claim will not be automatically removed from the list upon the "expiration date." It will only be removed after this point if another driver applies for the character in question. This essentially means that you have "unlimited" time to work on a canon - provided that no one else expresses interest after the six-month (if you do not request an extension) or one-year (if you do request an extension) period.

If you are an established member, you need only write a role-play sample when applying for for Major or Minor canons. For characters that are Mentioned or Canon-plus, it is sufficient to reply to this thread with: "I would like to play ****."

And please remember, just because you have been allowed to work on a sheet does not guarantee your getting the character!

A teal blue name denotes that a character has been claimed and a sheet is being worked on. The date listed indicates when the original application was approved, and a red asterisk (*) following that date indicates that a six-month extension has been granted.
--- If there is NOT an asterisk, the canon will be open to new applications six months after the posted date for claims approved after 1 Aug 17.
--- If there IS an asterisk, the canon will be open to new applications one year after the posted date.
--- A date in red font indicates the new expiry date for existing claims that expired prior to the new system, reflecting a driver's confirmed continued interest. This is a hard expiry date; the character will be open for applications after this point.
--- A date with a strikethrough indicates that the claim has expired and that the character is open for new applications. For documentation purposes, we are not removing the name of the previous claimant unless a new driver applies.

A bold, colored name (linked to the character's profile) denotes that the character is currently taken and actively played.
A gold name denotes a character that has been played in the past, but is inactive and thus open for new applications.
A purple name denotes a character that that been claimed by the admin team for plot purposes.

I’d like to apply for Cho Chang.  From my research, it seems canon offers very few details as to her life after the conclusion of the books, but I’ve given it some thought, and, were this approved, I would be interested in having her study to be a healer… possibly more along the psychological genre, as opposed to treating physical ailments.  My reasoning behind this is that Cho really has a difficult time coping when bad things happen to her, and this has inspired her to want to help others who are struggling.  Though she voluntarily came back to fight in the Battle of Hogwarts, it ended up being a traumatic experience for her, and in the aftermath she kind of broke down.  So her life is kind of in shambles, but she’s trying very hard to hold things together.

    Thank you for your consideration!

It had been a close call.  The headmaster had let her off with a warning, but had made it explicitly clear that this was her final warning, and that if she didn’t bring her grades up to the expectation by the end of the term, she would be expelled.  The healing field was a very competitive one, as the headmaster had reminded her, alluding to the fact that there were many eager applicants ready to take her place.  Cho knew that if she wanted to keep her enrollment at Dilys Derwent, she would have to work for it.  No more excuses, no more moping.  She never wanted to have another conversation like that again.  It was exhausting.  It had taken all of her efforts to argue in her favor in an attempt to prove to the headmaster that she was ready to be serious.  Cho hated trying to convince others of her worth – she had never been good at selling herself.  She feared that they would always be able to see through the façade.

As she pulled the lemon-yellow robes over her head, Cho contemplated her newfound sense of purpose.  She had been given a second chance, and she couldn’t waste it.  She had to do well.  As she faced the mirror, Cho gave a deep, shuddering sigh as she tried to collect herself.  She ran her fingers through her hair, scrutinizing her reflection.  She’d had a long cry, and her face was puffy and red as a result.  She was scheduled to serve a shift at St. Mungo’s tonight, and everybody would be able to tell she’d been crying.  At least she could trust that the patients on the fourth floor wouldn’t be too judgmental.

“You can do this,” Cho told herself, squaring her shoulders at her reflection.  Turning to walk out into the main room of the apartment, she retrieved her wand and bag from the kitchen counter and stepped toward the fireplace.  She took the Floo to the hospital, and started heading up to the fourth floor.  It felt like everybody was staring at her, and this time she was sure she wasn’t imagining it.  She kept her eyes low.  It was going to be a long night indeed.  While interning at the hospital, Cho occasionally wondered if it wouldn’t have been easier to pursue Quidditch.  It certainly would have been a less somber atmosphere, and therefore possibly more enjoyable, but the League was even more competitive than Dilys Derwent, and she doubted she was skilled enough to play on a professional team.  And whatever sense of accomplishment it might have given her, it couldn’t have compared to what she was doing now.  She wanted to help people.  That was one thing she had managed to learn from everything that had happened.

Upon entering the staff room, Cho realized it was empty, but figured the night healers were out making their rounds.  She stepped over to scribble her name on the sign-in sheet before dropping her bag off in her assigned locker.  Something had to change in her life, that much was certain.  She knew she couldn’t keep living the way she had been, for it wasn’t really living at all.  It seemed like every day was a struggle, like she was treading water, fighting to stay afloat.  If she didn’t pull herself out of it, she knew that she would eventually – inevitably – drown.  For a long time after the battle, things had been difficult.  It hadn’t been easy to move past what she had seen that day, and she wasn’t sure she ever really would.  But she was doing much better now.  The nightmares were less frequent, and there were periods of time where her thoughts weren’t occupied by the horrors she had seen and the friends she had lost.  That was something, at least.

It often seemed as though she was the only one who had fallen apart so spectacularly in light of the war.  She had tried to be as celebratory as the rest of them, to be happy that it was over, but it was just too difficult to overlook what had been lost.  Of course, it wasn’t as if it was the first time in her life that she had felt that way.  After Cedric had died, she remembered feeling as though nobody else seemed to hurt as much over it as she did.  To this day, thinking of him was painful.  Stepping up to the front counter, Cho began flipping through patient files, checking the progress notes to see if there were any updates since her last visit.

    [jen]approved! - please make a sheet.

I'm not against this per se; but you've already got two sorted characters and a third in the sorting hat; so I'd really like to see you get them all active before you attempt to get a fourth character sorted. So yes, feel free to make a sheet, but she won't be sorted until your existing characters are active.

I'd like to apply for Pansy Parkinson, please. I know this is a rather old sample, but it fits my vision of Pansy so well. I can write a new one if needed.

    --------

Pacing back in forth in the common room, she couldn't believe that it had been months since she last heard from him. No letters, no packages.. not even a bloody Christmas present. And did he care one bit? Not according to Pansy. As she kept her arms crossed over her chest, her face was scrunched up to a point that it looked extremely contorted, but she didn't care not one bit what anyone had to say about her. After all, they would all suffer in the end. Reaching down with her left hand, she picked at his last letter and stared at it. Stopping for a brief moment, she contemplated just burning the damn letters in the fireplace. Because if he was too busy to respond to her letters, then she didn't care one bit about burning them.

Glancing around the common room, she growled at a first year who had decided to place herself in the middle of Pansy's war zone. Smirking as the child ran away toward the dormitories, she crumpled up the letter and threw it against the wall. Slowly breathing in and exhaling, she held back the urge to scream, but calmed herself down, letting the anger dwell inside her. Mum was right, anger and violence were never the answer, but since when had Pansy ever listened to her parents? They were never around anyway; always making her fend for herself and sit around for hours being waited on by house elves who just seemed to be target practice for her. Now she was angry and wanted to throw things. Picking up the batch of letters that she held so dearly to her, she walked over to the fireplace and threw them in, watching the tan pieces of parchment shrivel up against the flames. She felt slightly satisfied now.

As she walked back over toward an empty chair, she sat down and picked at her messenger bag. Part of her was dreadfully angry with him, but another missed him terribly. She knew she should at least give him another chance and write to him, but the stubborn side of her told her not to. It would only lead to more pain in the end. Drumming her fingers on her bag, she bit her bottom lip in thought. It wouldn't hurt too much to write, and if she did, she could definitely enclose all her anger in the words that she'd write. It seemed like a plan, and it would at least occupy her for a few hours until she could find Daphne. As she came to her decision, she reached inside her bag and pulled out a blank piece of parchment and a quill. If he never responded, then that would surely be that last time he ever heard from Pansy Parkinson.

As she came to her decision, she reached inside her bag and pulled out a blank piece of parchment and a quill. If he never responded, then that would surely be that last time he ever heard from Pansy Parkinson.

I would like to apply for Poppy Pomfrey (Madam Pomfrey) please! I already have about 2/3 of her life's backstory planned. I've actually been thinking about this for a while (since before Penny), and fully intend to have Poppy active as the school nurse, should you let me  :)

    Rp Response:

Today was Sunday, and Sunday was inventory day. Poppy consulted the list floating in front of her as she counted bottles of skele-gro. "I'll need to order some more" she mumbled to herself, noting that one of the bottles was past its expiration date. Poppy was happy that there wasn't any need for more than four bottles; during the war she never allowed for less than ten bottles, at least. She shuddered, remembering how many bones had to be regrown; not only arms, but legs as well, the large femurs taking days of agony to regrow themselves. She remembered those students that no amount of skele-gro could heal them.

Poppy shook the thoughts out of her head, and looked out the window of her office. It was a bright May day, and it seemed that most of the students were outside, taking advantage of the rare perfect weather. She cracked open a window, and breathed deeply the crisp breeze that entered her office. A girl was giggling uncontrollably, and Poppy found herself smiling. It's all over now; time for the children to be children. She saw a group of first years playing on the grass together, picking flowers. The first years always looked terribly out of place compared to the other students; with their round button noses, small eyelashes and small statures they were still very much children, not yet having crossed the threshold into adolescence.

Poppy consulted her list again, to find everything crossed off. She checked her watch, and took out a bottle of Pepper-Up potion, and a glass, and walked over to her patient. The little boy had come down with the flu. Non-magical illnesses like the flu required one thing only; time. She looked down at the boy and smiled; he was fast asleep. They always looked so peaceful asleep, even if the exact opposite was true. The boy sighed in his sleep, and Poppy fought back an urge to stroke his forehead.

Not wanting to wake the boy, she walked back to her office. "Zinky!" she called out into the empty room, and a small house-elf appeared. "Please bring our patient lunch, Zinky", and with a POP she found herself again alone in her office. Poppy looked outside again to the children playing, and felt a burning pain, deep in the pit of her gut, a longing that could not be fulfilled. Poppy's biggest regret in life was that she had not had children. Sure, she longed for a life partner, and would have liked to get married, but if she were to turn the clock back and do it all over again, she would have had a child, with or without a father. It was too late for her to have child naturally, though she often fantasized about adopting a magical orphan; a small polite boy or girl who comes to Hogwarts with nothing but their name. But such a child never came, and Poppy was left with the students to take care of; each one as if her child, during their time in her ward. Some people have nothing she thought; at least I have this. I will always have this.

He's been heckling me for a long time now, and after the suggestion of another member who was unaware of the heckling, I have finally given into the temptation, haha. I would like to apply for the prince of sass/the original sassmaster (aka Blaise Zabini), please.

A billow of smoke spiralled in the air, and Blaise watched as it drifted upwards, then dispersed around him and dissipated slowly. When the acrid stench washed over him, he fixated the mindless teens with the cigarettes hanging unceremoniously from their lips, and glowered at them, letting them know how he felt about their nasty habit with one glacial expression. One of them placed his hands palms-up, indicating that no harm was meant, but Blaise’s caustic glare only intensified, and he turned his back to them haughtily before making his way into the building.

    It was undeniably grossly dull.

Outside, the sun had beamed overhead, pouring some much needed light on this otherwise dark town. Yet the interior of the shop Blaise had just entered was still dreary. Sunbeams did not penetrate the battered windows; only little flecks of light peeked through, often disappearing, reappearing, then repeating the process rhythmically. It was as if there were cloaked storm clouds hiding in every corner of the store, only revealing themselves when the sun seemed to be getting too comfortable. The décor did everything to aid the room’s gloomy feel, all pigmented grey or black. There was not a spot of colour to be seen.

Blaise’s intense dark eyes surveyed the decrepit interior with heavy disapproval. The chairs and a small table that occupied one corner of the room were made of old wood, and he firmly believed that one touch would send them to the ground in shambles. He placed the tip of his index finger against the hard, concrete wall and dragged it horizontally, then removed his digit to examine it. As he suspected, it was coated in dust. Disgusting.

He pursed his lips, sprinkling the dust away by rubbing his index against his thumb. This was why Blaise did not frequent Knockturn Alley; it, along with most who inhabited its streets, was grimy and grubby and far beneath him.

However, this one particular shopkeeper had something he desired, and Blaise could not return home without this vital ingredient. As he approached the desk, the tall man adjusted his cloak, which was the colour of night, and cleared his throat roughly, demanding that his presence be noticed. The owner, a short stocky man with a curved back and a missing hand, looked over, and Blaise’s eyes made four with his beady ones. Obediently, the keeper made his way to him.

“I’ll make this quick,” Blaise said, careful not to lean on the counter in an effort to evade the germs that undoubtedly smothered it. “I need the insane root. Now.” His voice had lowered, for though the few other inhabitants in the store appeared to be utter imbeciles, Blaise had learned that one could not afford to be careless in this market. He did not need the wrong person to overhear his dealings. “I’m willing to give you a good price for it…” He paused, recalling a false lead he had received not too long ago, and added, “…if you’re genuine, of course.” There was a tremor in his tone that indicated a threat; if he was being double-crossed, there would be dire consequences.
